Clearly and simply, Kyudo: The Essence & Practice of Japanese Archery, by Hideharu Onuma, with Dan and Jackie DeProspero, is THE definitive text. It's perhaps the very best martial arts book I've seen and I'm not even very interested in kyudo. It is well written, well designed, with superb photographs and diagrams. All books should be this good. It's another book in the Kodansha International list. A companion volume, titled Illuminated Spirit: Conversations with a Kyudo Master, by the DeProsperos, is a more in-depth look at Onuma Hideharu sensei's outlook on training in budo and how the way it relates to one's life. It is just as well done as the first book, on technique, and is available from Koryu Books.
